Is it fair to say that working with parents is the most stressful part of being a teacher?
I mean, no offense to those wonderful, committed parents, but we spend our days with 10-year-olds. It’s not that easy to make the leap to adult interaction.
But developing a community of supportive adults around your students is one of the most important things you can do.
(Which, of course, makes it that much more stressful.)
So let’s take a minute to talk about what parents are after and what will turn your class parents into that community of supportive adults.
As always, starting with an understanding of their needs will steer us in the right direction. Here’s a quick brainstorm of what I think parents need.
